Your
home theater speakers, or surround
sound speakers, along with your home theater
receiver are the main audio components of any surround sound home
entertainment system.
Most people
buying speakers today connect them to a home
theater receiver to use in a 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 digital surround sound
system. Therefore, home theater speaker systems usually
consist of 6-8 total surround speakers, including a subwoofer.
It usually sounds best when your speaker system is all the same
brand.

The main front speakers are
your most important speakers, along with your center channel
speaker. The majority of movie action will come from your
3 front speakers. Dialog mostly comes from your center
speaker, which usually sits directly above or below your TV.
Also, when you are listening to "just music", your
two front speakers can double as stereo speakers. In the back of your room, you
will have 2-4 rear/surround sound effects speakers whose job it
is to envelop you in 3-dimensional surround sound just like your
local movie theater!
